What is Bioimpedance Analysis and Can I Benefit from It?
Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) had its origins in hospitals, monitoring patients after surgery. This technology has also been used on space missions to monitor changes to astronauts’ body composition.
By measuring the reactance (electrical charge holding capacity) and electrical resistance of cells, accurate and highly relevant information may be obtained about your body composition and your functioning at the cellular level.
Traditionally, Body Mass Index (BMI), a figure derived from weight and height measurements has been used to determine if you are underweight, normal, overweight or obese. Unfortunately, it does not take into account the amount of muscle and the amount of fat you have. With standard BMI testing, some top athletes carrying relatively small amounts of body fat, come into the obese category, simply because they are heavily muscled as muscle is much heavier than an equivalent volume of fat. Hence, such a strategy used alone does not take into account your specific body composition and is unsatisfactory.
BIA accurately provides you with information about your muscle and fat levels and ratios as well as the integrity of your cell walls for holding electrical charge and fluid, the amount of fluid inside your cells as opposed to the amount of fluid outside your cells, the overall level of water in your body (hydration) and how well your cells are functioning in the context of your age.
With this information, under the guidance of our trained and experienced staff, you will have a much better understanding of what type of exercise and eating strategy would benefit you the most, how to manage your weight more effectively, support better nutrition at the cellular level, improve your muscle to fat ratio, improve energy levels and last but not least, how to age healthfully.
