What is the colon?

Your colon or large intestine is the last stage of your digestive tract. It is about 1.6 to 1.8 metres in length and about 8-10cm across. It ascends from the lower right side of your abdomen, where it connects to the small intestine , proceeds across the abdomen towards the left side near the rib cage and descends to the rectum and anus.

The colon’s function and dysfunction

Your colon’s function is to eliminate waste material ie faeces; to produce some vitamins through bacterial action, and to reabsorb fluid and minerals back into the bloodstream.

If malfunctioning, your colon absorbs toxic substances along with the water, vitamins and minerals. This is called auto-intoxication. Contaminants, due to putrefaction and fermentation, enter the blood stream and pollute the body at the cellular level, creating extra burdens on the lymphatic system and liver in particular.

The end results of a stressed colon

If your colon is stressed or malfunctioning, various symptoms may result – constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, discomfort and pain, feelings of fullness and very smelly stools, headache, skin problems, halitosis (bad breath), irritability and fatigue leading to more serious chronic disorders or diseases. Your colon, if toxic, may in fact be a major player in setting the scene for major health challenges of many kinds, including arthritis, skin diseases, frequent infections, colitis, diabetes, loss of eyesight, cardiac diseases and cancer.

If you are among the many who have deformities of the colon (see diagrams) – strictures (narrowings), diverticula (finger-like projections), pockets, ballooning and prolapse or ptosis (sagging), you need to develop strategies to compensate for these sources of colon toxicity developing as a result of these abnormalities.

Colon Hydrotherapy offers you a very safe and effective means of assisting the colon so that its function may be improved in its role as the main eliminatory organ of the body.

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon Hydrotherapy is a time-proven and highly effective means of thoroughly cleaning your large intestine.

At Sunshine Holistic Living, the equipment used comprises a gravity fed, closed system. The instruments are sterilised by autoclave to hospital standards for optimal hygiene and safety.

Herbal implants are also selected specifically for your needs.

The system has filters to 0.5 microns, eliminating parasitic cysts, giardia, lead, herbicides, pesticides, chlorine, thihalomethanes (THM) and chloroform from the water used for the colonic.

Colon Hydrotherapy sessions go for 45-60 minutes. It is discreet and your privacy is protected at all times. The skilled operator ensures the comfortable and effective functioning of the apparatus. A gentle massage of your abdominal area is often applied to assist in achieving the desired results for you. The massage is optional. Stimulation of Chapman’s reflexes, acupuncture holding points, and kinesiological clearing of the emotional energy held in the large intestine meridian and organ is part of the service.

Do you need Colon Hydrotherapy?

If your colon (large intestine) is healthy, you will eliminate daily, and ideally, soon after meals ie two or three times daily. If this is not so, you are retaining waste material that is a drain on your health. This may be due to a number of factors – poor choice of foods and eating habits, emotional stress, deformities of the colon, dehydration, habitually ignoring the urge to defecate and so on. Chronic constipation is usually the outcome.

If you are one of the many who suffer in this manner, with the help of colon hydrotherapy, you may eliminate this problem and dramatically improve your health and reduce the likelihood of diseases stemming from your toxic colon.

Even if you feel your colon is doing fine, it could certainly do with a good “spring clean”. Everyone holds toxic by-products in their colon to some degree that as the saying goes are “better out than in”.

Who administers Colon Hydrotherapy?

Our experienced colon Hydrotherapist is Jan Denten, with a background in nursing, holding a Diploma in Colon Hydrotherapy, a Diploma in Iridology and Certificate IV in Nutrition.

As a form of colon therapy, it is safe, comfortable and far more effective than enemas.

Before the session begins, Jan uses Iridology to check your digestive area and will use these findings to help you understand what is happening within your body for the purpose of the colonic. It is not a full Iridology examination.

How often do I need to have a Colonic?

This is a question asked at almost every session. If you are new to colon hydrotherapy, we suggest you begin with three sessions, preferable three in one week, that is, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is needed as it is important to hydrate the impacted matter in your colon allowing its removal. As for most things, everybody has different needs. Because of your individuality this is a matter that is best assessed by your Colon Hydrotherapist.

Will Colonics help prevent cancer?

A clean, healthy, properly functioning colon naturally detoxifies your body enabling the lymphatic system and tissues at the cellular level to drain properly. This in turn allows your cells to absorb nutrients effectively and to release toxic waste products readily.

Maintaining a clean healthy colon should really be a major focus in your choice to take responsibility for your health in a preventative way. If your internal environment is essentially free of toxic accumulations, your chances of developing chronic degenerative disorders as well as major life threatening diseases, cancer included, must be greatly diminished. Healthy tissues simply do not support disease.

Cancer of the colon ranks fifth as the most frequent cause of death in Australia according to Federal Government statistics. You need to keep this in mind and not take your colon for granted!

Why can’t I just take Laxatives?

Laxatives artificially force your colon’s peristalsis (caterpillar-like contractions of the smooth muscles of the colon, pushing faecal matter along its length) by stimulating the nerves controlling these muscles. Extended use of laxatives exhaust your colon’s muscles causing them to become weak and ineffectual. More laxatives are then required to achieve any results. Additionally, laxatives are habit forming and lead down a dead end street in terms of your health.

What do I need to do to prepare for a Colonic Irrigation?

The Days Leading Up to Your Colonic

It is preferable (but not absolutely necessary) to abstain from meat, dairy and grains for around 3 - 5 days before you have a colonic. All these food groups may have a constipating effect on the body. We suggest you treat this time as a mini Detox - you can emphasise lots of vegetables (a rainbow diet ie as many variations of colours of vegetables as you can find) -

Preparation for a Colon Hydrotherapy session

The day before your colonic:

Don’t eat after lunch (1pm), drink lots of weak black or green or herb tea or water.

Around 5pm, dissolve 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts in a small glass warm water & drink quickly. Over the next couple of hours, drink 2L water (extra) (warm tea, can be black/green or herb-no milk or sugar & is easier to get down than 2 L of plain water) If you are a generally constipated person, this will help the colonic a lot. If you usually have a bowel motion more than once a day, a teaspoon of Epsom salts will be fine.

You can have vegetable juice, stir fried vegetables, or a light salad later in the evening, this is up to you, you don’t have to fast.

First thing in the morning, ½ lemon squeezed into a cup of warm water. For breakfast, have a bowl of fresh fruit and maybe some good quality yoghurt. Your breakfast won’t affect the colonic.

Stop drinking fluids about 1 1/2 hours before the colonic or your bladder may become uncomfortable during the procedure.
