Nutrition and You

Nutritionally, Can I get everything I need from food?

Well, of course, it’s possible. However, this statement has a number of conditions. You may possibly get all or almost all the nutrients you need from your food provided

  • The food you are eating is not chemically grown, ie organic. Chemically grown food is simply less nutritional than non-chemically grown food – University studies have proven this fact. Unfortunately, there are both availability and affordability problems for many people who would choose to eat organic foods but are not in a position to do so.
  • You are eating optimal quantities and varieties of such foods.
  • Such foods are being properly processed by your body ie digestion, absorption and assimilation.
  • You are relatively free of mental-emotional stress in your life – stress plays havoc with nutritional status through the nervous and hormonal systems.
  • You do not have genetically determined elevated bio-individual needs for specific nutrients that require you to have possibly several times the average for those nutrients for proper biochemical functioning.
  • You are not in a situation or condition that requires higher intake of various nutrients – pregnancy, nursing mother, ill, aged, athlete, shift worker, infections and so on.
  • Your body is free of toxic metals and foreign man-made chemicals that interfere with biochemical function.

For someone, health professional or otherwise, to state that the average person may receive adequate nutrition from dietary sources is therefore simply ridiculous. In the light of the conditions mentioned above, very few people are able to receive adequate levels of nutrients. Many people in our society ingest excessive amounts of macronutrients – proteins, carbohydrates and fats but their intake of micronutrients – minerals, vitamins and cofactors, are woefully inadequate ie they are overfed but undernourished.

Therefore, the answer to the question is definitely no for almost everyone, most likely you included.

Will Vitamin/Mineral and Food Supplements Make Up the Difference?

supplement in the hand - is it worth 2 from the bush?

Once again, it is possible, but there are also conditions here as well.

Firstly, you need to know in what areas of nutrition you have deficiencies and also in what areas you have excesses – both may be a major source of health problems – so that these areas of imbalance may be addressed properly.

For you to simply take a broad-spectrum multivitamin/mineral supplement, thinking it will fill in the nutritional gap, is definitely shooting in the dark. You need to remember that nutrients compete strongly with each other for absorption and assimilation. Already existing nutritional imbalances may be worsened with such a shotgun approach. At the very least, it may be providing you with expensive urine and, at worst, actually harming your health.

Secondly, you need to be aware that synthetic vitamins do not have the same biological effect as vitamins derived from food. Your body will utilise synthetic vitamins provided the quality is good, but has a definite preference for the plant and animal derived counterparts. Your body is genetically set up to thrive on natural whole foods.

Therefore, deriving as much of your nutrition from proper whole foods – not devitalised processed foods – and using some synthetic vitamin and mineral supplements to address deficiencies that have been scientifically assessed, ie Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis, Kinesiology, Live Blood Analysis for example, is a compromise but probably your best option.

But My Great-Grandfather lived on Corned Beef and Damper, Smoked and Drank and Lived till 93!

Well, firstly most of his compatriots of that era did not reach anywhere near his age. He simply had good genes in the sense that his constitution was very strong and tolerated the abuse well. He also lived in an era with virtually no pollution and his simpler lifestyle ensured far less mental-emotional stress and much more physical activity.

You are probably not as constitutionally strong as your forebears. Each generation is, although living longer, becoming more prone to disease. Although life expectancy is being predicted to increase with medical breakthroughs, if the basics are not properly addressed – detoxification and protection from the toxic environment and balanced nutrition – this cannot occur.

Eating a Suitable Diet For Me
and Taking Suitable Supplements
Will that Take Care of Most Things?

This would certainly be a step in the right direction. Once again, these are conditions that are bio-individually determined.

Establishing a suitable, health promoting eating plan, together with judicious supplementation, is an essential ingredient for improving your health. As you are unique in your requirements, there is a need to tailor make such a strategy with the assistance of properly trained and experienced natural health professionals.

Simply ingesting such foods and supplements is really only the first step as there are six stages of nutrition that need to be addressed. These are: ingestion, digestion, absorption, circulation, cellular utilisation and elimination.

If any one or more of these stages is not properly represented, even a seemingly very suitable approach may fall well short of the mark with an unremarkable outcome for you. Once again such stages need to be assessed and corrected where necessary for you to optimise your nutritional status.

Over-riding all of these considerations, however, is the need for proper detoxification of your system to enable effective functioning of your nutritional processes to occur. As there are more toxic substances impacting upon us now than ever before, detoxification, tailor-made for your specific needs, is now an absolute priority.
